The Staffordshire Regiment is currently serving as one of the last units in Afghanistan before the handover to the Afghan Government in mid 2014. The 3 Mercian Soldiers have also had the added pressure of having the tour extended from 6 to 9 months during which the facilities in Afghan are slowly being withdrawn. By the time the Regiment get towards the end of their tour they will be operating under basic facilities. Now Christmas has passed and the troops have received their parcels from family and loved ones, morale is at a high. To further boost their morale and let the troops know that we care we are holding a" boxes for soldiers" day. This is a chance for the people of Stafford and surrounding areas to give a item/s to be sent to the troops.
BOXES FOR SOLDIERS

Guildhall Shopping Centre, Stafford
We will be located in the ex-Virgin Media unit at the Guildhall Shopping Centre on the above date and time and will provide the boxes for the public to come and donate and pack a shoe box. This will then be sealed and labelled and sent to the troops of 3 Mercian Regiment. If the public wish they can leave the boxes for us to pack and seal.
Items not permitted would be aerosols, chocolate or crisps and biscuits.
All other items any be checked before packing.
We have found from experience that books are too heavy and this reduces the items per box.
During the last tour, Stafford sent 260 boxes. We aim to beat this number and hopefully aim to send one box per soldier.

Market Square, Stafford
In 1614 King James I sealed a Royal Charter which established Stafford's mayoral system. The first hold...er of the new post was wool merchant Matthew Cradocke, one of the key supporters of the Charter.
Prior to 1614 Stafford was governed by two Bailiffs elected from a pool of twenty-one Capital Burgesses.
In 1617 King James I visited Stafford and was so impressed with the Mayor's silver-gilt Mace, paid for by Matthew Cradocke, that he ordered "it should never be allowed to rest". Even today the Mace is always kept in an upright position.
In the past 400 years the longest serving Mayor was Walter CT Mynors, who served between 1897 and 1901. Mrs Ellen Marie South became the first female Mayor of Stafford in 1932.

At 1pm here will be a parade of military and civic dignitaries through the Town Centre to welcome the new Mayor of Stafford, Cllr Ray Sutherland.

X MARKS THE SPOT FOR GUILDHALL TREASURE HUNTERS
Budding Sherlock Holmes are required for a forthcoming Guildhall Shopping Centre event.
A treasure trail around the Guildhall in Stafford on the 30th and 31st May, will see intrepid style-detectives seeking answers to a series of clues, to be in with a chance of winning big prizes.
And as well as £200 in shopping vouchers for the winners, there will be a prize for everyone who takes part.
The #STYLEHUNTERS weekend, which is thought to be the first event of its kind in the country, is a partnership between the Shopping Centre and more than 20 of their stores, including River Island, JD Sports, and Poundland.
Guildhall Shopping Centre Marketing Manager Anne Graham said: “#STYLEHUNTERS promises to be a fun and exciting event for all the family, with free colour, style and fashion tips from our experts, and most importantly prizes, on offer to everyone who takes part.
“And if that were not enough, there will be further prizes of up to £100 in shopping vouchers for the best images posted from the hotspot at the finishing point, to our Facebook or Twitter pages!”
The #STYLEHUNTERS partnership is the brainchild of “Only on the High Street” - style consultants who specialise in organising events for shopping centres and high street retailers.
Director Laraine Robathan-Field said: “Traditional retailing continues to face stiff competition from the growth of online shopping, so it is imperative for retailers to be innovative and think creatively to survive and compete.
“The key is to provide the customer with an experience they can’t get online.
“#STYLEHUNTERS will do just that – it will help the Guildhall engage with customers and encourage them to visit and shop at the Centre by providing them with a fun and exciting experience.”
